If you’ve been wondering how you can enjoy some quality family time this year, why not think a little outside the box? Rather than a family road trip upstate, take things to the next level by journeying somewhere completely unexpected. Tucked away in the northwestern corner of North America is the magical state of Alaska, a place endowed with sweeping vistas of mountain crags, glistening snow and verdant forests. One of the world’s truly beautiful destinations, the American state is also the subject of Aurora Expeditions Alaskan tours. But perhaps one of the best things about Alaska, is that its natural beauty can be enjoyed by both the young and the young at heart. It’s a fantastic way for children to learn to appreciate nature’s awesome beauty and scale, as well as why it is important to conserve it for future generations.

What will you see on an Alaskan family cruise?

You have two options when exploring Alaska with Aurora Expeditions. The first, Alaska’s Inside Passage sees you sail up the fjords, narrow straits and islands that make up the Inside Passage. There will be plenty of opportunities for you and your children to marvel at the diverse wildlife here, so keep your eyes peeled for mountain goats, moose, deer and bald eagles. In summer you might even witness breaching whales, not to mention Steller’s dolphins and porpoises. You’ll also visit culturally significant sights, learning about the Tlingit and Haida people and seeing native art galleries and Chief Shakes tribal house. Older children who are confident snorkellers may even want to join in a Polar snorkel, to discover a whole different world beneath the water.

The Discoverer’s Glacier Country tour takes your family on a dazzling tour of the Glacier Bay National Park, part of one of the world’s largest protected areas. You’ll be surrounded by mountainous, forested landscapes, as well as sheltered fjords, all home to an array of creatures. Experience the thrill of whale watching as well as getting up close and personal to breathtaking glaciers – you might even be present for the ‘white thunder’ that takes place when icebergs are calved.

Is an Alaskan expedition suitable for children?

As we covered in our recent blog, at Aurora Expeditions, we welcome young voyagers aged 8 and above onboard. As this is such an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience, we recommend that if you are going on an Alaskan cruise with kids in tow, be certain they are old enough to appreciate such a journey. As the tours can also involve some gentle hiking, make sure they are up for some fresh air and exercise. Please bear in mind that as there are no child minding facilities onboard, you will be fully responsible for them as their parent or guardian.

Ready to plan your next family holiday?

We are not currently taking expeditioners to Alaska. However, we invite you to be inspired by expeditions to the Canadian Arctic and beyond.
