Camping on the ice in Antarctica is more than just an excursion; it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself into a world of unparalleled beauty and raw wilderness.

Imagine laying on your sleeping mat amidst vast icy landscapes under a never-ending pastel sky, surrounded by glistening icebergs, listening to ice crackling and penguins braying nearby.

We spoke to four passengers who decided to leave the comfort of their ship for the night and wriggle into a thermal sleeping bag for an unforgettable night under the Antarctic night sky. Read on to discover their most memorable moments, challenges and surprises, and top tips for expeditioners considering adding this unique activity to their Antarctic expedition.

Interview with Judy Gulikers

For Judy Gulikers, the opportunity to go camping in Antarctica was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity she couldn’t pass up, and she isn’t likely to forget the experience of sharing a campsite with seals and penguins, with the postcard-perfect Paradise Harbour spread out before her, any time soon.
What were your thoughts and emotions as you settled in for a night on the ice?

What an amazing experience we were having. In fact, everything was amazing. We can't rate highly enough the whole Antarctica experience, but lying there on the ice, looking out over the glistening Paradise Harbour with the Sylvia Earle lit up in the distance, we were simply in paradise!

How did the unique environment of Antarctica enhance your camping experience compared to other camping trips you may have taken?
Well we have never camped on ice before, that’s for sure. Nor have we shared our campsite with leopard seals with sounds from a distant penguin colony reaching us, or experienced opening our eyes at midnight to daylight. So it was totally different to other camping trips.
Were there any particular moments or memories from the camping experience that you will cherish the most?

The view from our bivvy bed was amazing. I still pinch myself that we got to experience that. Looking out over the water with the Sylvia Earle lit up in the distance was incredibly peaceful and you couldn’t help but smile lying there listening to the faint sounds of penguins.

Were there any unexpected challenges or surprises during your camping adventure?
Probably not unexpected, but if you are not a good sleeper then the lack of sleep can be a challenge and make the night seem long. It was nice to get into bed back on the ship and get a few hours of sleep before another incredible day in the most amazing place in the world. Frustratingly for me, my husband had a great night’s sleep.
How did the Expedition Team ensure your safety and comfort throughout the experience?
They were very well organised, and even had toilet arrangements in place that were unexpected. They helped us set up our sleeping sites and clearly explained the three-layer sleeping bag arrangement.
What would you say to other travellers considering adding camping to their Antarctic expedition? What are your top tips?

Take a sleeping mask. I had to pull my beanie down over my eyes as it never gets dark.

Interview with Natasha Boddy

For Natasha Boddy, adding camping to her Antarctic expedition was a no brainer that allowed her to experience as much of the seventh continent as possible. Plus, when would there be another opportunity to camp on Antarctica? If she could have had it her way, she would have stayed in her little slice of untouched paradise for even longer, but as is always the case on an Antarctic expedition, there were more unforgettable adventures to be had across the Peninsula!

Overall, how would you describe your experience camping in Antarctica?
It was definitely an adventure! It was incredible sharing the space with a couple of seals, sweeping the snow to make our own bed, cuddling up in the sleeping bag and gazing out at the sea and ice, listening to penguins squawk in the distance.
Were there any particular moments or memories from the camping experience that you will cherish the most?

My most memorable moments include looking out over the peaceful sea and watching our ship drift away in the golden light of the sun, and in the morning, waking up to the beautiful white stillness.

My husband’s most memorable experience, as he keeps reminding me, was that in the night, I pushed him off of his sleeping mat so he literally slept on the snow!

Were there any unexpected challenges or surprises during your camping adventure?
It was not as cold as I imagined because the sleeping bags were toasty warm. The only challenge was getting up in the morning!
How did the Expedition Team ensure your safety and comfort throughout the experience?

We had a couple of catch ups beforehand to prepare us for what to expect on the night. We were given specialised gear for cold weather camping. The team made sure that we were set up correctly and we knew how to use the ‘facilities’’ during the night if needed.

Did the experience live up to your expectations?
Yes – even more so because the campsite chosen was on continental Antarctica!
What would you say to other travellers considering adding camping to their Antarctic expedition? What are your top tips?

Go for it! It's a once-in-lifetime activity. You have already invested time and money into the trip so might as well experience as much as you can. The gear provided is well equipped for the cold and wet of the snow and (for me at least) the day’s activities tire you out, making falling asleep easier than expected.

Interview with Julie Robert

When the idea of camping in Antarctica was first presented to Julie Robert, she was hesitant. However, she felt safe throughout the experience. Having a few members of the Expedition Team on hand to answer questions and keep watch over the small group of adventurous travellers during the night was a huge comfort.

What motivated you to participate in this unique activity?
I loved the idea of spending more time on land and immersing myself in my surroundings. You don’t get to camp in Antarctica every day!
Overall, how would you describe your experience camping in Antarctica?

Sleeping on the ice, under the Antarctic sky during the Austral summer, was unlike anything I’ve done before. We had almost constant daylight, with the sun only briefly dipping below the horizon. I did not get much sleep, but it was well worth it!

What were your thoughts and emotions as you settled in for a night on the ice?
I first felt excitement as I was setting up my camp site. Once I was settled in and warm in my thermal sleeping bag, I relaxed while soaking in the sights and noises around me. You can’t help but feel grateful for living such a unique experience.
How did the unique environment of Antarctica enhance your camping experience compared to other camping trips you may have taken?
This was my first time camping in a cold environment and also without a tent. I did not feel cold and loved having uninterrupted views of the incredible landscape around me. What really set it apart from previous camping trips were the sounds of nearby seals and penguin colonies.
Were there any particular moments or memories from the camping experience that you will cherish the most?
All of it – the constant daylight, nearby wildlife, the sounds of ice cracking in the distance… it was simply unforgettable!
Were there any unexpected challenges or surprises during your camping adventure?

When we got to the landing site, we found out we’d be sharing the space with a couple of sleeping seals. That said, there was still plenty of space for us all to spread out and keep a safe distance from our new furry friends.

What would you say to other travellers considering adding camping to their Antarctic expedition? What are your top tips?
Don’t miss out! My top tips would be to layer-up, avoid alcohol that evening and make sure to use the toilets beforehand.

Interview with Brianna Hore

When Brianna Hore decided to embark on her dream trip to Antarctica, she yearned to connect with the raw and pristine environment. The experience of camping on the ice exceeded her wildest dreams, and she has fond memories of feeling warm and snug in her “sleeping bag burrito” that will stay with her for a lifetime.
What motivated you to participate in this unique activity?
Camping in Antarctica was a dream come true for me. I love camping so I was drawn to the idea of sleeping in front of a glacier under the midnight sun. It sounded like a magical experience unlike anything else on earth. I wanted to feel a deep sense of connection with the environment and wildlife, a feeling you can only get by falling asleep and waking up in the wild.
Overall, how would you describe your experience camping in Antarctica?

Sleeping on the ice under an endless sunset with two dreaming Weddell seals beside us was surreal. Our campsite was surrounded by glaciers perfectly mirrored by the water – it felt like waking up in a dream. That night will forever be one of the greatest experiences of my life and something I hope to have the opportunity to do again one day.

What were your thoughts and emotions as you settled in for a night on the ice?
I settled in for a night on the ice in sheer excitement. My mind was racing with all the magnificence of everything we had done that day. I lied there in wonder, pinching myself that this was really happening.
How did the unique environment of Antarctica enhance your camping experience compared to other camping trips you may have taken?
There’s nowhere more remote, fragile and untouched by man than Antarctica. It a magic beyond description. No other camping trip can compare. Antarctica leaves you awestruck.
Were there any particular moments or memories from the camping experience that you will cherish the most?
My most cherished moment was the sleeping seals. The computer game noises they make while they were dreaming and waking up in the daylight with the mirrored reflections of the glaciers on the water was mesmerising.
How did the Expedition Team ensure your safety and comfort throughout the experience?
We had a few meetings to go over how the camping trip was going to work so I felt well informed on how to keep warm etc. There was a lot of expedition team members camping with us and Mike had loads of Antarctic camping experience so I felt safe and well equipped. Plus, the ship was nearby if anything was to go wrong.
What would you say to other travellers considering adding camping to their Antarctic expedition? What are your top tips?
If you love camping and want to spend as long as possible on Antarctica’s unexplored ice, the memories you make during this activity will be among your favourites. It is unlike anything else on earth and will leave you feeling incredibly lucky.
