Day 4 – Buenos Aires

Discover Buenos Aires on a shared small-group city tour (3 hours). With its splendid and varied architecture, old colonial buildings, French palaces and state-of-the-art skyscrapers, vibrant nightlife and endless cultural options, Buenos Aires is one of the world’s most fascinating cities.

Today’s itinerary will take in the city’s most famous sites, giving you a great introduction to this vast city. Visit Plaza de Mayo, the city’s foundational site, the Presidential Palace called La Casa Rosada (Pink House), the Cabildo, the city’s primitive town hall, and the Neoclassical-styled Metropolitan Cathedral, the final home of Argentina’s founding father, José de San Martín.

At Palermo Chico, located in the suburb of Palermo, you will find impressive French palaces and parks designed by celebrated landscape architects, such as the Frenchman Charles Thays.

In Retiro and Recoleta, you will be forgiven for thinking you’re in Paris. After visiting the impressive Plaza San Martín, where Jorge Luis Borges used to take his walks, take a stroll down elegant Avenida Alvear, lined with exclusive boutiques of the world’s luxury brands and grand French-style palaces, which nowadays house a number of embassies. Then we’ll visit the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, one of the city’s oldest churches, completed in 1732.

Continue to Puerto Madero, the latest addition to the city’s barrios. In 1991, its huge warehouses and silos were remodeled and redesigned to finally integrate the river to the city, and to create a new corporate, residential, and gastronomic district filled with trendy new restaurants and bars. Afterwards, head over to San Telmo, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. It used to be the residential district favored by wealthier porteño until the late 19th century, when a yellow fever epidemic drove out the wealthier families. The area became rundown and marginalised until the 1970s, when the area attracted artists and artisans to set up studios and workshops. Today, thanks to its amazing architecture and trendy atmosphere, San Telmo is a bustling neighbourhood filled with antique and vintage clothing stores. Take a stroll along its cobbled streets to Plaza Dorrego, best known for its traditional antiques fair, held every Sunday. You are also very likely to see tango performances in the streets and plazas of San Telmo.

Leaving San Telmo behind, continue southwards to La Boca, one of the city’s most authentic and charming neighborhoods. It is a working-class district, heavily shaped by Italian immigrants who arrived in Argentina in large numbers during the last quarter of the 19th century. A walk along Caminito Street will give you a good sense of the character of Buenos – passion for soccer, vibrant street art, and tango on nearly every corner.

This evening, enjoy the El Querandi Tango dinner show. 35 artists in residence, two tango orchestras, a folklore band, dancers and singers, paired with a menu of traditional and international dishes, and Argentinean wines make for a fun introduction to Buenos Aires. (B,D)
